We take on multidimensional poverty quickly and efficiently through accelerated training, holistic rehabilitation into society, connection to immediate opportunities for income, and access to further education.
With unemployment rates 4-5x higher than the population average, close to half of families live on less than $3 USD/day.
These predominantly black and brown communities suffer from excessive police intervention, violence and lack of access to reliable basic infrastructure.
These people are stuck in a poverty trap.
It's time to break the cycle.
Próximo teaches residents how to generate income in the short term and enables them to invest in their future with education. Our centers are housed in established community NGOs, run by people who have lived their entire lives there, and we use digital tools to keep operations efficient and scalable.
Our team includes designers, engineers, public policy experts, business analysts, educators, psychologists, social workers, and more. Proximo is led by Nicole Gonzalez, Bruno Bueno, and Thiago Nascimento and thrives off of partnerships with local organizations that best understand the specific needs of their people.
This project began mid-2022 with a deep co-design research initiative funded by Stanford University's Design for Extreme Affordability program. More than 320 favela residents were interviewed and included in envisioning a solution to mass unemployment in vulnerable communities.
